Ipad Pro 1st Gen Vs 2nd Gen

  1. Whelp...there's no general section at TW so here goes:

I grew up in Toyota trucks. I learned to drive stick in my dad's '87 4Runner (which the family had for 25 years) and our neighbor's '85 Xtracab, am the original owner of my modded 2000 Tacoma (pictured left) and have owned and worked on pickups, 4Runners, RAV4s, Landcruisers, etc that I fixed up and flipped. My wife DD's a 2006 DCSB TRD Sport and I'm the guy who neighbors' bring their Toyotas for mechanical advice. You get the point; I kinda like Toyota trucks.

We just went on a 3500 mile road trip in my wife's '06. It did great, but is bone stock, will need a bunch of attention before long and I just can't get over the 5 foot bed. We didn't take my 2000 Tacoma because the Xtra cab is small for all of us on trips (She, I and the dog. No Access Cab on this gen either) and the ride is not as freeway-friendly compared with the 2006. But after 2 weeks on the road, we're both in agreement that we need to start thinking about replacing one (or even both) of our trucks. My dad passed a few winters ago and left us enough to lay down a pretty good chunk on something new(er) without financing. If you knew him, I think he'd like the money he left us was going to a new truck.

Trouble is, I'm torn on what to do. My wife only barely puts up with how much I talk about this (especially since there's a bit of emotion tied up in the funding). I love my 1st gen. It's super-clean, super well-maintained (all done myself over the years with nothing but Toyota parts and high-end aftermarket mods), the super charger pulls it up the hill to our house at 9k feet better than the stock '06 1GR-FE and I know it'll last me another 20 years. But we're looking to start a family and even now, it's tight when we all climb in. As a result, I've felt lately that it's useful days are slowly ending for us. As much as I'd like, I can't afford to keep it as a plaything because at 185k miles in the condition it's in, it's still worth a bunch sold. It's just gonna really hurt to let it go.

But since I figure we need to start thinking about a replacement, we went and drove 3rd Gens today. There's a Quicksand DCLB Off-Road that caught my eye. It was a very, very nice truck with more bells and whistles than I knew what to do with. I think I could really get used to that premium interior and the super comfy seats. Problem is, even though it makes sense to buy a Tacoma new, I didn't swoon over it like I did my 1st gen all those many years ago. I can confirm what I've read here that the new motor felt a little gutless down low (especially compared with my hot rod 5VZ-FE) and I'm concerned about some of the issues I've been reading about on this site. The bottom line is: I just didn't fall in love with it, but haven't ruled it out entirely.

Given how we really like the 06, the afternoon had me thinking that if I could find a newer version of it with a LB, it might be the ticket. There's a nice 2014 DCLB V6/AT near me that I'll be checking out Monday. It's about 10k cheaper than the new 3rd Gen we looked at, has the tried and true 1GR-FE I really like and the current owner is a straight shooter. But I've never been in love with 2nd gen interiors and I'm a little concerned about blowing that much money when in actuality, I've got a perfectly good truck and that money could be used 20 different ways for everything else in our lives.

So should I even consider getting rid of my 1st gen? Maybe I should just get my wife an Outback and keep the 2000 forever. Our future kids can just ride in the bed hanging on for dear life like I did growing up FFS.

Seriously, though, TW...What would you do?

You sound like you love your first gen. Keep it. Maybe sell the 2nd gen DCSB and trade it for a newer 4Runner? I wouldn't buy a third gen if you didn't like it... that's a great way to get buyers remorse, and you'll take a hit financially if you decide not to keep it. If you need the DCLB, maybe buy a 12+ year. The interior is a little nicer.

I've always thought it a bit weird when a couple has two identical cars. My coworker and his wife both have Mazda3's. My wife's coworker and her husband have Audi A4's - identical vehicles. I always think that's weird. To me a 2nd gen and a 3rd gen are functionally similar vehicles (same size, similar capabilities, etc...). So, I'd say 1st gen and 3rd gen. But do what's right for you!
  4. Keep what you got... save your money.

If you're not in love with the 3rd gen it's okay because they keep rolling off the assembly line. Maybe one will strike your fancy sooner or later.

    Two things:
    1. You didn't swoon over the new one like you did your 1st gen because you are older and smarter, not because of the truck.
    2. Don't use your inheritance to buy the truck. You can get super low finance rates. Put your money into a safe mutual fund making 5%+ and make payments on the truck of your choice at a low interest rate. That's a smart way and it takes all the emotion out of the money.

Get what you want. Living at 9K ft a supercharger will always win over a NA engine.

As I can see it from my vantage point..... DON'T BUY 3RD GEN!
  7. As a parent with two children, get a CUV/SUV of some sort. Pick the flavor that fits your lifestyle and budget. Toyota makes several and, if you can get past it, so do other companies. While others can talk about covers and toppers my experience is that a good sized CUV/SUV covers off just about every type of trip a young family needs to make. Keep one of the trucks for fun, weekend adventures, and home improvement projects then buy something practical for your second vehicle. We've been a two truck family, and quickly bought a small CUV once we realized trucks don't always work for every family trip (even though it was a Ford because I disliked the drive of the RAV4 ).

Keep the 1st gen without a doubt. Dump the 2nd and buy a 3rd for the wife. If you sell a clean 1st I can almost guarantee sellers regret.

I have a 3rd gen long bed, while I like it. I wish I would have bought a new 4runner and a trailer. I really like the newer 4 runners. They are just better than the 3rd gen imo.

Good advices above. But remember, when you bought the 1st gen, it was your first Tacoma. There would be a special feeling there. Like when you kissed your first girl (or boy—-keep it PC). Now you've got 2 Tacoma's. Buying a 3rd....you prob won't get the flutters, rainbows and lollipops.

I've had 2 first gens. Never bought a 2nd, although I spent a ton of time in them. 3rd gen's hit and I knew I wanted one. Been happy since. 4Runners are nice, too. But I hate towing trailers and wanted a truck bed.

Get the gen 3 your wife will love it. I could tell by the expression on my wifes face. It drove smoother and quieter then her Acura MDX
  13. Thanks for all the good opinions guys. Appreciate it. Great to get some outside insights from the Tacoma family.

A 4th Gen 4Runner isn't out of the question either; just didn't want to complicate my long rambling question further.

However, the owner of the 2014 Tacoma is making an extra trip to see us Monday, so I won't even waste a trip to check it out. The extra effort on his end could indicate a motivated seller, so we'll see.

  14. Specify what problems your taking about... I believe that every new/old trucks or cars WILL have problems at a certain point or another. My friends uncle is a master mechanic manager at the local Toyota dealership as well, the Tacoma/Tundra is the least vehicle seen for any issues other then regular maintenance.

Get rid of the 2nd gen and get a 4Runner. Problem solved
  16. I've had all three gens so here's my input.

1st gen- Great truck and best reliability out of all the generations. Yes a little small and slow but you got the supercharger so makes the last point mute.

2nd gen- great truck pretty much same size wise to third gen. No major knocks Against it unless you buy a newer model then it's terribly outdated interior wise.

3rd gen-best looking truck if set up right and the interior is much nicer with little perks. Expensive and the shifting sucks!

If I were you keep the 1st gen and sell the wife's 2nd gen for a SUV or 4Runner. Or you get the 4Runner and keep her truck.Like other posters said no point in keeping two similar vehicles. Besides the Tacoma is small anyways for a family. You will eventually need more room.

  17. I spent a lot of time comparing 4runners and Tacomas and pondering what would best serve my purposes. Decided on the 4runner, figured the back didn't lose much if any space over a 5ft bed. I got to the dealer, looked through 4runners but they didn't have any OR's or any colors I liked (red, white or black) so I figured I'd take a look at the Tacomas while I was there. The moment I saw it, standing next to it in person, it was instantly decided. Brought back too many feelings from the past trucks I've owned.

I have owned all 3, can't go wrong with any of them.
  19. ^^^Horror stories on the internet abound with any product, but the fact that the salesman (very knowledgeable, BTW) brought them up in his pitch yesterday, namely the tranny issues and leaf spring/u-bolt problems, leads me to believe these are things not just isolated to a few trucks. If you've had problems with your 3rd gen, that really sucks and I hope your dealer is taking care of you. If you haven't, I hope you never will, but the thought of rolling the dice on a $37k truck is definitely part of my dilemma here.

The second and 3rd gens aren't very big. Although they look it to some, with a baby seat in the back you have to have the seats pretty far up. Not a good family vehicle in my opinion, but if you need a truck and have to be able to get kids around and a full size is out of the question than it's better than nothing. Maybe get the wife a new family vehicle and keep one of the trucks for yourself to haul crap or do whatever. Again just a suggestion. Bottom line is no one knows you, your family, your situation or any variables better than you! Sit down with the wife and talk about what is best for the two of you.
